She's killer diller when she's dressed to the hilt

20 July 2023

I can't possibly pretend to be cool. But sometimes my kids think I am. Sometimes my boyfriend thinks I am. The kids I went to middle school with will never think I am.

Another friend of mine thinks I'm cool and sometimes he calls me Killer Diller. So what more fitting a name for this blog than that?

This is a collection of blog posts, or essays, if you will, on whatever’s killer diller in my book. It’s a space that’s all mine to process life and share stories for no other reason than I, like many of you, enjoy storytelling. It’s a fundamentally human activity.

The internet, however, is a remarkably new medium for us, if compared to storytelling over the span of human history. And I’ve no desire to be known from any of this. So I’m only ever going to blog using pseudonyms for my family, friends, and other people, keeping as many identifying details private as I possibly can. Like all our stories, some of mine are messy. And they involve people, many of whom are trying to live their best lives, like me. Who am I to share personal details that make moving on a difficult task for them?

Why storytelling is important

Aside from helping me process what I’ve experienced, storytelling is important because it helps us understand one another and build empathy. My oldest child, Rae, likes to have deep philosophical conversations with me early in the morning when we’re walking to the bus stop before school. It was their interest in my stories that made me wonder about the possibilities and consequences of sharing them broadly online. Stories can help us learn, as I hope they do in Rae’s case.

When I came of age, personal blogging was way more commonplace than it is now. In my becoming, being able to read other people’s stories was instrumental in exploring my own identity. I didn’t feel so alone. So maybe this will be that for someone else. And even if it only ever entertains two people, I’ll feel proud of that still.
